Question:

Our Australian Kelpie has a viral liver problem. He is responding well with medication and a hypo allergenic diet, basically Hill’s d/d. This prescription diet is mainly fish and rice. There seemingly are no snacks on the market that he can have. We have attempted  to ad hoc a rice/fish biscuit but it was not well liked! Was wondering if anyone might have a recipe or suggestions as to what we could use for snacks. Thanks. Jerry Atkin

Is your dog allergic to lamb?  Most dogs aren’t.  My dog is allergic to beef so we give him Nutro’s lamb and rice treats and some pet stores around here sell lamb bones for him to chew on (he LOVES these).  Chicken and turkey are also usually safe.    You may jus want to have some cooked fish in the fridge all the time and just give him that as a treat. You can also make "liver brownies" with fish liver, which you can buy in cans. Mix with flous (made of whatever bean or grain the dog can eat) and garlic and anise and bake. take a look in the cat treats aisle of the pet supply store and look for salmon treats (check ingredients carefully of course) and freeze dried fish treats Nancy – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Our Australian Kelpie has a viral liver problem. Hello, Science Diet also just came out with a prescription diet treat. It can be used with most of the prescription dog foods, and I think that d/d is one of the diets on the list. You should check with your vet and see if they will work. Also Science Diet has a written recipe for dog treats that you make out of their food….I think that you add flour or rice or something in a blender with the d/d and water and bake them…..but there again ask your vet for the specific recipe. I hope this helps! Melissa – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Our Australian Kelpie has a viral liver problem.
