Question:

I had to take my little girl to TED yesterday, and they diagnosed her with a  bladder infection and sent us home with some liquid antibiotics and some  literature.  Turns out that she has FUS and I have to change all 3 cats diets  now.  Can anybody tell me if changing her diet is the only thing I need to do  to keep her from getting this again?  I’ll do anything to keep my little girl  healthy, that is if she ever speaks to me again and comes within 10 feet of  me.  Only one dose of meds and now she thinks I’m Hitler.  Turns out this is  some kind of running problem in my family.  On Wednesday my mother had major  colon surgery, and yesterday Bob has a peeing problem.  What next? Cheers! Janice I think animal testing is a terrible idea; they get all nervous and give the wrong answers. "A Bit of Fry and Laurie"

Hi, Janice: Is your vet growing an organism from a culture of Bob’s urine, to make sure she’s on the right antibiotic? Changing her diet is a good thing, and she should be kept on this diet permanently.  What is she eating now?  Is it, by any chance, Prescription Diet C/D?  This is a good food for maintaining urine acidity, though it’s not right for all FLUTD kitties. Another thing to consider is switching your cats to distilled water for drinking water.  My vet switched my cat Zelmo to this after he blocked.  It may not apply in your case, but where I live, the tap water is loaded with minerals that Zelmo doesn’t need. Table scraps should be prohibited, and I’d talk with the vet if you want to give Bob any kind of treat, even if it’s a cat treat. Also, talk with your vet if you’re considering giving Bob any kind of urinary acidifier.  These can actually do more harm than good, if the cat is already on a special diet that maintains acidity. Good luck to Bob — I hope she feels better soon! Becky
